Electric shock can cause severe muscle shock and pain, burns on the skin, sudden loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, numbness or weakness in the arms and legs, injuries from a sudden fall, and a rapid heartbeat. Electric shock to the heart muscle can cause death. Timely first aid can save lives. Let's know what to look for in case of electric shock...

Method

Check the person's condition

If the person is unconscious, not breathing, or has no heartbeat, immediately initiate CPR if you know how. Call the nearest ambulance or doctor immediately.

Check for breathing and pulse

If the victim is breathing and conscious, keep them in a comfortable position. Avoid moving them, especially if they fell from a height.

Check for injuries or fractures in the body

Electric shock can constrict muscles, which can lead to broken bones. In case of a fracture or serious injury, avoid moving them and consult a doctor.

Treat Burns

Wash the burned area with cold water for about 20 minutes. Do not apply any ointment, oil, or ice. Cover the burn with a clean cotton cloth.

You can get these tests done

Sometimes, symptoms of electric shock do not appear immediately; muscle stiffness, difficulty breathing, or heart rhythm disturbances may occur after some time. Therefore, if the person experiences symptoms such as fainting, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, or pain, tests such as an ECG, blood test, skin burn assessment, CT scan, or MRI should be performed immediately.

Don't make these mistakes

  • Do not move the person if they have been electrocuted.
  • Avoid touching the person directly in contact with electricity.
  • Do not touch the injured person with any metal object.
  • Try to turn off the main electrical switch before handling.
  • Do not apply oil, ghee, ice, or toothpaste to the burn.
