 Rules for Washing Your Face

Washing your face seems like the simplest task in a skincare routine. In our desire to achieve clean and attractive skin, we often wash our faces multiple times a day. However, washing your face correctly is what truly makes your skin look fresh, clean, and healthy. Most people make mistakes when washing their faces, causing their skin to appear lackluster, dull, and lifeless. In fact, certain errors made while washing can actually cause more harm than good to our skin.

■ Wash your hands with soap before washing your face. Our hands are constantly exposed to bacteria, oil, and dirt. Washing your face with dirty hands can spread this grime across your face, clogging pores and leading to the appearance of pimples and acne.

■ Wash your face twice a day. Washing your face in the morning helps remove excess oil, while washing it in the evening eliminates the dust, dirt, and pollution accumulated throughout the day. If your skin feels dry and tight after washing, it is a sign that frequent washing has stripped away your skin's natural oils and moisture.

■ Use a soft, clean cotton towel to dry your face. Dirty towels can harbor bacteria that may transfer to your skin. These bacteria can clog pores, potentially leading to acne and other skin issues.

■ Washing your face with hot water strips away the skin's natural moisture. Conversely, washing with cold water causes the pores to constrict, preventing the face from being thoroughly cleansed. Therefore, always use lukewarm water to wash your face. Instead of rubbing, gently pat your face dry. Lukewarm water opens the pores to effectively remove oil and dirt, while simultaneously preserving the skin's natural oils and moisture.

■ Using an excessive amount of face wash can be harmful to your skin. This strips the skin of its natural oils, causing it to feel dry and rough. A pea-sized amount of face wash is sufficient for washing your face. Dispense it onto your palm, rub your hands together to create a lather, and use your fingers to apply it evenly to your wet face. Apply it gently in a circular motion, as vigorous scrubbing can cause abrasions to the skin. When selecting a face wash, be sure to keep your skin type in mind.
