Regular blood donation reduces the thickness of the blood, which reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. It improves blood circulation and prevents clotting in the arteries. After blood donation, the body produces new red blood cells, which improves oxygen transport and increases energy levels. Donating blood once burns 500-650 calories, which can be helpful in reducing weight. Excessive iron depletes, which can be harmful to the body. Blood donation is replenished within 24 hours.

Do not donate blood in these conditions

■People who have recently undergone an operation.
■Pregnant or lactating women.
■People suffering from infectious diseases like HIV, hepatitis B or C, malaria.
■People whose hemoglobin or BP is abnormal.
■Cancer patients and people undergoing chemotherapy.
■Heart patients.
■Diabetic patients.
■Those who take narcotic drugs.

Some temporary restrictions

■Do not donate blood until 1-2 weeks after fever or flu is cured.
■Do not donate blood for 24-48 hours after dental operation.
■If you are taking antibiotics, do not donate blood until one week after the completion of the course.

Who can donate blood

■The age of the person eligible to donate blood should be between 18 and 65 years.
■Weight should be at least 45-50 kg.
■Haemoglobin should be more than 12.5 g/dL.
■Men should donate after 3 months of previous blood donation and women after 4 months. Should be free from HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis etc.
■BP should be around 120/80 mmHg and normal pulse set should be 60-100 BPM.

When donating blood for the first time

Take 7-8 hours of sleep at night before donating blood. Have a light and nutritious breakfast, do not go on an empty stomach. Drink plenty of water 24 hours before donation. Do not go to the gym or do heavy work 24 hours before donation. Rest for 10-15 minutes after donating blood.
