What is IP rating?

IP rating is a four digit word. Like IP 67 or IP 68. IP means ingress protection. It tells how much protection will be provided when something from outside comes inside. Its digits 67 or 68 mean protection from dust and water respectively.

6 is used for dust. This is its maximum rating. Whereas 7 or 8 tells the rating of protection from water. Its maximum rating is 8. This shows how safe your phone is from sunlight and water. Like – dust does not enter the device with IP68 rating and this device can stay inside water at a depth of more than 1 meter.

What is IP 69?

Now IP69 is also written in some phones. This means, the phone can stay in 3 meters deep water. It can also withstand high pressure water jets. IP rating tells about the safety of the device against dust and water. So whenever you buy a phone, pay attention to this.

Who gives the rating?

The International Electrotechnical Commission decides how much rating the phone and other electronic gadgets will get. This is a rating agency, which gives rating after testing the device on many parameters of testing. This is also an expensive process. Just like rating is given for the safety of cars, similarly now there is a rating system for phones as well.
